It seems obvious that I chose these kicks for there fast color. But, beyond that Montrail are a great trail shoe for those of us who need a little extra traction on wet, slippery, rooted, west coast trails. The "Bajada" is also super light weight with a comfy stretchy mesh construction. These runners may not make me run my next 10 k in under 45min. but I will look good doing it. Now, I just have to find a matching running outfit. Ha ha!

This was my father, Jim Boulding, favorite quote. He was a character and burned very bright but died quite young of cancer. I was 12 when he passed and he left me with a good foundation for life but also a small hole in my heart. I will always remember him telling me we had two choices in life. You could be a winer and a bitcher or a happy warrior.

Recently I have discovered that as I grow older my connection with him becomes stronger.
Maybe because the past becomes more relevant when we're searching for answers. I'm happy to say I've enjoyed all of the excitement, frustration, hard ache, jet lag, adrenaline and understanding that Restless Josie has gifted to me.

It feels like I'm on the edge of a large precipice and waiting for someone to ask me to jump... Maybe I should just let go of the outcome and trust in my own instincts.

This is an image I grabbed with my iphone on my dog walk today. It was raining but mild and strangely monochromatic. Then I noticed a very large puddle in the middle of the field. Well, that's what rubber boots are for , so I ventured in. There was all these beautiful little plants pushing through and living in the puddle. On gray winter days, that little pop of color can mean hope... Beauty is everywhere you just have to be open to it:)

Day one of The Billabong Pipe Masters went off with 15-20 foot monster waves.
This photo proves that Tanner Guduaskas is a modern day gladiator. He broke two boards, took some gnarly wipe-outs and still won his heat. With less than 2 minutes left on the clock he paddled back out with another board and a big smile. Good luck tomorrow Tanner and let the force be with you:)

My local hill opens Friday and I've been trying to get my legs strong so I can kill it this year on a snowboard. I have a strong motivation because I might get to cover some gnarly snowboard events and I don't want to feel like a poser.

I wake up stiff virtually every morning since I started working out and sometimes there is a window of doubt that opens up and screams in my head "your causing yourself bodily harm", "you need to rest more," "you're old", "you're not good enough". I say "Bull shit" to that negative self talk. I never feel more alive than when I'm outside doing sports. It makes me stronger physically but especially mentally and I need that. So the next time you're making excuses to not work out, read this quote from my gym Bodynetix:

Injuries can be worked around. Busy schedules can be worked around. There is no reason that everyone reading this can not give up 3 hours a week to improve their health, reduce their body fat, increase their muscle tone and improve their energy, immune system and over all quality of life.

Maybe even print it in colored markers and tape it to your fridge!

New Beginning

I feel like it's been ages since I wrote anything for my Blog. This is partially due to a case of writers block but mostly laziness. I feel like winter malaise can be especially crippling when our Canadian days are so short in November and the grey ski and rain seems endless. This should be the perfect time for working on indoor intellectual pursuits but when feeling the winter blahs who would want to listen? Unless of course I have something interesting to share or a tidbit of wisdom to ponder.

No such luck. Ha! I have had some small slivers of excitement lately. A recent Girls night out with a gallery opening and the guilty pleasure of the Breaking Dawn premier. I was especially please to learn that even at such a crummy time of year, artists can lift you up and help you see beauty. Lucy Shappy and Jennifer Weber (pictured) are two such artists. There feminine way of combining ethereal imagery with a pretty pastel pallet left me yearning to take some of that beauty home.

Unfortunately just as I was falling in love with one of Jennifer Webers paintings, I saw her sneak a little red sticker dot on it. I guess another person had a similar need to take a little beauty home.

As for the Breaking Dawn movie it wasn't as good as the first or second twilight movie but it was still a lovely escape to a fantasy world. If you love the books and the movies it doesn't disappoint but if you're new to the whole thing, I wouldn't recommend starting with this installment. A few too many dreamy close ups and montages for my liking but the seen where Bella has her baby won't be soon forgotten.

This photo was taken during one of the most exciting interviews of my life. Doing a sit down with Adrian Grenier ,of HBO"S Entourage, in front of a crowd of thousands definitely brought out my A game. I felt like it forced me to put on blinders and focus my attention completely. It felt similar to climbing a really hard route and only thinking about your next move. One track mind! I can't wait for my next similar experience.

Wow, This is me admitting to being an absentee blogger. I have meant to write about my experiences as of late but real life kept getting in the way. I know what your thinking. Excuses, excuses. It takes 10 min.to phone your Mom but often it's just one more thing on your to-do list.

When I left you last, I had just gotten a cable TV channel to agree on airing Restless Josie. Done. Now, I can concentrate on making incredible mind blowing television. Wrong! I now had to focus on hiring a crew, getting a business loan, phone lines, new camera equipment, insurance and if that wasn't enough, raising about one hundred thousand dollars. Tired yet? I'm only just getting started. We haven't even started filming.

I realize now that if making your own television series was easy then TV wouldn't suck. The networks would have so many quality programs to choose from that nothing sub-standard would ever make the cut. Unfortunately, most talented, imaginative artist types could never handle the production side of things without loosing there minds.

I know this sounds condescending and slightly exaggerated but take it from me, the tedious shit you have to finish before you even get to think about content is mind boggling. Most of it do-able but boring and soul sucking.

I think I've managed to even bore myself with this dribble. On to the good stuff. Filming....The good new is, my new crew is getting along famously and is even starting to feel like family,(but family you enjoy). We filmed our first 30 minute episode in 6 days. I for one was very rusty after months spent at the computer and not on camera. But, somehow we caught our stride by day 3 in Tofino and started to produce some good content.

This next week will be spend editing our pilot. The first show being very important because your trying to win an audience. Hopefully, we will have so many banger shots to choose from that we will have trouble cutting. The fear being that you don't have enough content and you have to re-shoot. As much as I love filming in Tofino, I hope we have tons of great footage. Maybe I will even have something fun to post on this blog to get all 16 of you frothing in anticipation. And to answer the question, "yes" I phoned my mom:)

I feel very grateful that Restless Josie will be aired on Chek 6 in the fall. I'm going to get paid to do what I love. Filming is my passion and even if the cameras weren't rolling I would still want to travel and meet interesting Canadian athletes. It's what enjoy and feel passionate about. The only way to ever succeed at anything is to put blood, sweat and tears into it. I worked very hard on the development of Restless Josie for the last two years in the hopes of creating a quality program that incorporated my passions. I feel very excited to to start filming next month and I can't wait to see how my next adventure plays out:)

I woke up at 6am this morning with an urgency. Yesterday I received a call from the president of a B.C TV station. I had sent the station my first Restless Josie travel show proposal three weeks prior and was waiting for a response. "Patience" was my mantra but it was a bitter pill to swallow filled with anxiety and self doubt. Funny thing, yesterday even after receiving the invitation to come meet the programming manager at the station in a couple weeks, I was still anxious.

I fear failure.I fear letting the world know I tried to be special and fell on my face. But, the alternative is worse. I cannot live with the knowledge that I had amazing opportunities in my life and I didn't have the guts to step up.I have Nelson Mandela's Inaugural Speech on my wall and I would love to share it with you.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. What is it about Spring? In Canada it signifies the return of the birds and fresh buds on the trees. But it's more than that. It's a chance for a fresh start. Out with the old, in with the new. I've noticed a vibe in the air of romance and promise.

I think every spring should start with a good purge. Make a dump run, donate some old cloths you haven't worn since last spring. Clean the mold off the windowsill. Dust off the mountain bike and get back out on the trails. Or maybe it's a new hair-cut your craving. Whatever your fancy, I say Carpe diem.

What does it take to achieve greatness? No matter your what your goal in life may be, you probably dream of being a success, whatever that means to you. For most of us defining success is the hardest part. Buddha would tell you to find a tree, sit and visualize. Donald Trump would probably give you a talk about taking risks. Your mother might tell you to be vulnerable because without an emotional connection you'll have nothing to lose.

No matter what it takes to get up and go in the morning,(because no one ever made it big by sleeping till noon),everyone needs to believe in something. I've never had the lofty ambition of saving the world. I always thought focusing on those nearest and dearest to me seemed more tangible and immediate. I suffer impatience and have a hard time with separating myself personally from my work. This in turn makes it hard to accomplish great things with my career because I'm afraid a failure at work could mean a nasty case of self doubt.

Well, here I am feeling completely emotionally vulnerable because I've taken a risk. I set a lofty goal for myself of getting Restless Josie on cable TV. I have butterflies just typing this. How dare I, a small town Canadian women think I'm good enough for television. Isn't that for the Kardashians of the world? What can I offer that isn't already available on the 120 channels broadcast world wide?

Well, I guess we'll see... to be continued.

Whistler- a recipe for happiness

I'm sitting reliving my weekend through video and photos suffering from a massive adrenaline hangover.I just returned from a weekend trip-of-a -lifetime in the Whistler area. Columbia invited a group of photographers and journalist to Whistler for four days to test new gear for Winter 2011-2012, in particular their new and roasting hot heated jackets.

We stayed at First Tracks Lodge at the base of Creekside, steps from the gondola. The first day started with a quick demo of the gear and an introduction to our Extremely Canadian ski guides. Then we jumped on the gondola headed for epic day on the slopes. It was snowing and the visibility wasn't great but luckily the snow was soft up top and our guide even found us some fresh tracks. Apres was at Dusty's, followed by an incredible dinner at Araxi - three level seafood tower.

The next day we woke up early and took a shuttle to Pemberton for the best day ever of heli-skiing. Coast Range Heliskiing started by dropping us off on top of one of the most beautiful mountain tops I have ever experienced and it just got better from there. I got to snowboard over 10,000 vertical feet in 20 centimetres of blower, untouched powder. Basically, I'm ruined for life because the ski hill just isn't going to cut it anymore. Apres was spent at the Scandinave Spa dipping our sore tired bodies in hot and cold hydro therapy. We hit Creekside's local fav, Rim Rock, for a delicious dinner to close out one of my best days ever.

For the final day we shook off the cobwebs and sore muscles with an incredible zip line aerial tour of Whistler's temperate rainforest with Ziptrec Ecotours, followed by an Olympic Biathalon lesson at Callaghan Valley. As long as it's not a breathing target who doesn't like shooting guns?

I know what you're thinking. You hate me for being born with a horse shoe up my ass. I know, but like I said, this was a once in a lifetime trip. Unless of course someone else wants to take me heli-snowboarding.

I've talked to a few women since doing my most recent photo-shoot and told them a little about what was involved. I had a couple hours of hair and make-up before we even thought about wardrobe. After that much preparation there is always less post production needed in photo-shop. All the same I thought it would be interesting to show an image before and after photo-shop. Hopefully, the corrections aren't too obvious. Good photo-shop should be subtle. After all isn't it our small imperfections that make us interesting? That's what my mom always told me about my freckles.

Woke up this morning to crazy wind and rain on the roof. I knew that meant only one thing. It was dumping on the hill. The wind was a little worrying because at Mt Washington they often close the upper lifts when it gets too stormy. But, it also means the fair weather skiers aren't heading to the hill. We had fresh tracks on every run of the morning. As long as you stuck to the steeps and kept your speed up it was perfect. I did have my neck warmer pulled right up to my goggles but I had some of my best runs of the season. Storms can be good, especially when they bring swell and powder!

This is my photo essay from yesterday morning at Mt Washington. Having 30 cm of fresh snow and sunshine I headed up the hill even though I only had a couple hours. I decided since the Boomerang chair wasn't open, I would fall in love with the old sunrise chair. All the photos were taken with my iphone4 and I love it because I always have it in my pocket. It's no good owning all the fancy camera gear in the world if you always leave it at home. :)

There is a reason why skate borders are the best athletes in the world.

1. They fall on pavement, (they learn how to fall properly)
2. They have extremely good balance, agility, coordination and timing.
3. They are often under paid teenage boys and girls with barely enough money for new trucks, wheels and decks and yet they keep practicing.....
4. They have mastered the art of not letting the fear stand in the way. Otherwise they would never pull huge air on vert ramps.
5. They can have crazy core strength. (Ever tried a kick flip?)

Backcountry Baby

Today I went back country snowboarding for the first time this year and it was fantastic. Sunday's at Mt.Washington are always crowded and lift lines long. The condition of the snow pack was stable and the forecast called for good weather so it was an easy decision. I brought snow shoes because I don't own a split board and even packed polls which came in very handy. I think my favorite part was the vistas we got from a high elevation and the new perspective on my local hill. I got to check out heroin chute, the run that lives up to its name and could make sense of the stories I'd heard told for years. I also got some fresh tracks two days after our last snow fall. I would say there's a good feeling when you earn your turns and even the charlie horse at the end of the day didn't dampen my mood. Good Times!

Just watching Kanye West- My beautiful dark twisted fantasy

It's a feast for the senses. The cinematography has an old Hollywood glamor with interesting camera angles and spectacular lighting. The music is Kanye's best. My favorite part of the film is the bird lady. Her costume is that of a super model phoenix, with life like feather wings that put a Victoria Secret model to shame. She's so beautiful it's like staring into a glimmering jet engine.

The last shot of Kanye running trough the forest being the strongest yet simplest shot of the short film. Directed by Kanye West himself, I have considerable respect for his artistic talent.

You have to buy the whole album on itunes to get the short film but it's worth every penny.

I guess that's my first rav. review!

It's day 5 of solid rain in Byron Bay. Crazy to think that just two years ago Australia was at the tail end of a had a 10 year draught. Now, there are flood warning everywhere. It makes me think Vancouver Island might not be the rainiest place on earth.

I made the best of the weather today and went to the Spa http://www.byron-bay.com/kiva/
They had a crazy wood burning aboriginal sauna. It was a low round building and you had to crawl through two small doors to get inside. The room was a perfect large circle with a fire place against one wall and only enough head room to sit. After sitting in the intense heat you had a beautiful cold bath outside. I stopped noticing the rain after a while even thought most of the spa was outdoors because your already soaking wet and it's warm.

I went to check the surf later today and it was big gnarly storm surf. Fingers crossed that it will clean up for tomorrow.

Merry Christmas from rainy Byron Bay. We are having a monsoon. It's been raining very hard for two days strait but it hasn't dampened our Christmas Spirit. We decorated a dead branch with popcorn and gummy bears and we even cooked a turkey. The Christmas traditions of your family tend to follow you wherever you go. I still remember the first year I was away from my family for Christmas. I was at school in France and desperately wanted to come home for Christmas but our family's budget was already stretched to it's max. On Christmas day my whole family, all 24, wrote me a 13 page fax and I cried like a baby when I read it. Have a wonderful day and enjoy all the love that's out there for the taking. Love Josie

What an amazing day. It started slow with a trip to the Byron Sunday market for fruits and vegetables. Than off to check the surf. Still flat in Byron so we went around to Tallows. Nice clean waves but crazy rain storm. Not feeling burly I thought I would wait for the rain to slow. My family arrived for there Christmas beach rental around mid-day and I moved in. Nice beach house just outside of Byron Bay. Then off to Brunswick Heads for a surf. The rain is still coming down hard and I'm feeling like I'm back in Tofino as I pull on my wetsuit. The waves are small but clean and I got lots of nice long rides. We are sitting out in the line-up when someone points out a pod of dolphins about 15 feet away. There must have been school of fish nearby because all of a sudden the dolphins were all around us. Two swam right under my board and others seem to be riding the waves. It was a little scary but very exciting. I felt so alive. There were also a couple less friendly guests that showed up. Two huge sting rays kept swimming right under us. I asked the locals if there was anything to worry about and they said there was probably sharks around as well. Maybe the locals just wanted the waves and were trying to scare us off. We stayed until I could no longer ignore my hunger pains. Then back to the beach house for a big glass of wine and a hot bath. A B.B.Q and Zoolander ended a perfect day.

I'm writing this entry from Organika in Noosa, Australia. It's day two of no swell, so time to move on. Up the Gold Coast towards Byron. My cousin lives in Byron Bay so I might be sleeping on her couch tonight. I've been trying out a longboard to see if I would like to purchase. Hard to know because I've only been able to surf it once. Boards shaped in Australia don't come cheap and this used board will set me back 700. It seems like everything is a little more money here than in Canada but taxes are included in the prices. I've also been told people are payed well here and unemployment is only around 5%. Nice!

I'm off to check out the zoo and hopefully have my picture taken with a koala bear.

My trip to Australia has been fantastic!

The Vancouver airport was particularly entertaining. I tried to web-check for my United trip and it kept coming up that I was MR. Josie Boulding. I went to the United representative who assured me that they could clearly see I was female but pointed out that my passport had sex marked as M. Interesting that in the last 4 years no one including myself had caught this error.

Ashley Tisdale was going thru security with her tiny dog in full Louis Vuitton, giving us a nice distraction from the tedious security checks. The 16 hour flight from San Francisco wasn't too painful and we arrived to a rainy, humid morning in Sydney.
My step sister Jackie picked us up and quickly perked us up with a great seafood lunch at Coochie beach. Then on to Bondi for a surf.

I lucked out surfing because after asking the lifeguard where to rent he sent me to Everything wet. They not only rented me a board and wetsuit but also introduced me to Jack Johnson. Amazing! I even got to share a few waves with him. Unfortunately I did almost take him out at one point when we both almost collided but after catching my board before it hit him he was still very gracious. He really seemed very down to earth and after talking to him you felt instantly comfortable. Jack, as he introduces himself, is a very grounded man. Nice!

I have surfed everyday that I've been here, and today will be no exception so I'll write the rest of my trip update later and add some photos. Promise.

It is with a happy heart that I write this entry. I'm off to Australia today and my thoughts are inspired! We are creatures that are compelled to travel, explore, experience. Yet, there are always times of required patience and the constant fight against the mundane existence we are all force to endure at times. These times will progressively get shorter and shorter for me as I realize my true potential. When I strive to be different there is always resistance but I never walked away from a good challenge. What's all this psycho babel about? Well, I can tell you it's going to translate into the best Restless Josie episode yet. Watch out Australia because I'm off leash. The Restless Josie crew is coming and it's going to be huge!

Julian Wilson's exclusion from Pipe is causing some reaction to the old rules. Is it time for a change?

Julian Wilson just came second at Sunset to Brazilian Raoni Monteiro.
Raoni beat Julian by a slim margin of 0.17 points. After a third and a second in the first two stops of the Vans Triple Crown he is very close to qualifying for the World tour next year. He's sitting in 31st and that means he could easily be bumped out by two guys who place well at Pipe. Why isn't Julian competing at Pipe?

Even after reviewing the qualifications, I'm still not sure. It was established in 1970 and attracts the top 45 surfers from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) as well as 16 surfers who compete in walk on trials.
The wild cards this year are all from Hawaii. Oahu’s Jon-Jon Florence, Maui’s Ian Walsh, all-time Pipeline favorite Bruce Irons and Kauai’s Kamalei Alexander and Danny Fuller.
It seems there is a little wiggle room to include men who seem worthy. My vote is for Julian. After his results in the last two triple crown events he has proven himself. Allowing Julian to compete would level the playing field so he could earn enough point to qualify for the world tour and compete for a share of $400,000 prize money.

I enjoyed watching Jullian Wilson's new movie "Scratching the Surface". It's beautifully shot in full HD with sick helicopter footage from Jaws and slow-motion water footage from barreling Indonesian waves. If your looking for killer surf porn this movie's got all the goods. Jullian pulls an amazing amount of airs and seems to land every single one. There is a little glimpse of his early childhood and some interviews with family and friends. Not too sure if we get to know the real Jullian but it does leave you wanting more. He looks great in various sunglass and close up lifestyle shots and you do wish he would talk more to the camera but I have a feeling we will see lots more of him in the future. As his star rises on the A.S.P world tour, people will take notice. Jullian's surfing style is pushing the progression of the sport and his first attempt at movie production is no exception. Keep up the good work.

I had the best day snowboarding!!!I went hiking for turns at Mt. Washington with my friend Martin and my dog Silva. It was so bright and sunny and the snow was perfect. I love starting the season with a little hiking to get the legs in shape for a hopefully epic season.

I was trying to choose a photo that best summed up my trip to N.Y. I think this photo of the lobby of Hotel Gansevoort does the job. My hotel was in the meatpacking district and everything there was art, food, fashion and popular culture. I loved walking around at night. The city has an energy that's contagious. I can't imagine anyone cooks at home because the restaurants choices are endless and affordable. You're surrounded by a beautiful mixture of language and race and it all seems to fit perfectly. Calling N.Y a cosmopolitan city would be redundant. N.Y has refined everything fabulous from the world and incorporated the best parts into it's city. It's easy to understand why New Yorkers feel like they live in the epicenter of the world.

The winner Josh Kerr,from the Gold Coast of Australia, was very stoked to win the Cold Water Classic yesterday in Tofino BC. When he knocked out Peter Devries in the two man heat, round of 16, he told me he felt badly taking out the hometown hero but it the end it's a competition. I spoke with him after his win and he told me his wife will enjoy spending the prize money and that the Gold Coast is breeding ground for not only sharks but great surfers.I look forward to catching up with him when he starts the Triple Crown events in Hawaii later this year.

I had a very disappointing e-mail yesterday. Apparently Canada Post's guarantee of three day delivery is fictitious. My video editor Adam Chilton and I worked crazy hours editing our entry for the Canadian Surf Film festival. We knew we where cutting it extremely close with our entry but we were pushed creatively by the deadline and the adrenaline. (not to mention excessive caffeine and single malt) I mailed it Monday from Tofino because it was going to a P.O Box and couriers don't deal well without an address. The nice women at the desk assured me it would arrive Thursday, the day before our deadline. I breathed a sigh of relief and put it out of my mind. Yesterday I got an e-mail from the festival coordinator with the news that it hadn't arrived on time and we where thus shit out of luck. He's exact words being "have you thought of posting it on Vimeo or You-tube? After a slight melt down, I realized that there would in fact be other festival and my Restless Josie viewers would benefit from an improved product. Moral of the story? Film can always use more editing! Hopefully you will enjoy the improved Tatchu episode by early next week. Keeping it real, a much humbled Restless Josie.

Just returned from a very emotional trip to Tatchu surf lodge on the west coast of Canada. This trip had all the elements, good food, great people, surf, adventure and just the right amount of suffering. I'm a big believer in destiny and I felt that this was the film I was suppose to be making and I was exactly where I should be. Living in the moment truly is the secret to happiness.
